My current role is as a Consultant Counselling Psychologist in the NHS and I am Psychology Lead and Head of Service for a borough-wide integrated psychological therapies team in a secondary care mental health service based at the Maudsley Hospital. In the NHS I work with adults with complex and severe mental health needs including mood, anxiety, trauma and personality difficulties.  I have experience in  working with psychosis having led psychology in an early intervention in psychosis service whilst working in East London.  In private practice I work with people with a range of difficulties including:

  • Depression,
  • Anxiety (incorporating OCD and Panic Attacks)
  • Relationship difficulties,
  •  Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar Affective Disorder.

For a number of years I have taught on various  post-graduate Clinical and Counselling Psychology Programs on the topics of culture and diversity.  I am regularly involved in teaching at the local Recovery College as well as contributing to teaching on post-graduate courses offered by the Institute of Psychiatry Psychology and Neuroscience on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and affective disorders.  I am also a regular reviewer for the journals Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy and Counselling Psychology Review. Recently I was a therapist in a multi-national randomised controlled trial looking at Group Schema Therapy where I provided group and individual schema therapy with supervision from the founders of the Group Schema Therapy approach. My other interest is in the professional development of staff.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based psychological therapy recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to treat a number of conditions such as Depression, Anxiety (including OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder, and Panic Disorder), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Affective Disorder and many more
In CBT the therapist and client work together to see how the individual’s thoughts, feelings, behaviour and physiology are connected.   I then use this understanding to help you change any unhelpful patterns in your thinking or behaviour that are maintaining the problems we have identified together.   This then gives you tools to use in the future to help you stay well.
Schema-Focused Therapy
Schema-focused therapy is for people with long-standing difficulties which affect their relationships.  It helps for people with complex needs who struggle with regulating their emotions and can find themselves acting impulsively in a way that leads to negative consequences.  I am accredited to provide schema-focused therapy with the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST).  I use creative emotion-focused techniques to guide individuals towards a healthier more integrated self.
